Hospice service rated as outstanding

A charity which provides end of life care has had its services rated as outstanding.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspected hospice and at home services provided by Marie Curie across north east England.

The CQC said patients and families are "active partners" and involved in care plans at all stages.

Regional head of nursing Gillian Raine said: "It was particularly pleasing to see inspectors shining a light on how we strive to involve patients in their own care and respond to their needs."

Jose Gaglioni, from Gosforth, who has Motor Neurone Disease which affects the nerves and brain, receives physiotherapy at the centre in Newcastle and has joined the men's baking group.

He said: “I didn’t know much about the Marie Curie hospice before I came here. I thought it was just a place people came to die.

"But actually, no, it is such a warm and friendly place with so much to it.

"I love coming to the groups and I have made some good friends."
