Swastikas carved into RAF memorial sign
BBCSwastikas have been carved into an RAF memorial sign in an act of vandalism branded "despicable" and "horrific" by parish councillors.
Several symbols have been scratched on to the sign in Winfrey Park, Spalding, which commemorates 100 years of the Royal Air Force.
Long Sutton Parish Council said it discovered the vandalism at 09:00 BST on Monday and reported the incident to Lincolnshire Police.
John Clarey, chairman of the parish council, said he was "lost for words" and that it was "very sad that anyone would do such a thing".
The sign was installed in the park in April 2018, near trees planted to mark the RAF's centenary.
The parish council said it suspected the damage happened overnight.
According to officials, incidents of vandalism were not uncommon in the park, but they had "not experienced anything this serious".
Clarey blamed the vandalism on changing attitudes: "There's no discipline. It's a funny old world we're living in.
"You don't deface something like this. It's ridiculous and very sad."
The parish council confirmed the sign had been removed for repairs. It is hoped it will be reinstated in the coming days.
Clarey wanted those responsible to think about the impact it would have on the local community.
"Realise how much damage this has caused to the sign, veterans and serving personnel. Think about what you've done to the memory of those people," he added.
Lincolnshire Police has been approached for comment.
