Armed police have arrested a man following reports of a weapon, forcing a nearby school into an emergency lockdown.

Officers were called to Great Northern Road, in Derby - near Derby Cathedral School - just before 15:00 BST on Tuesday.

Derbyshire Police said a man was arrested and no weapon was found, adding no-one was threatened or injured.

Pupils from a nearby school were "briefly held inside" while officers dealt with the arrest, and they were able to leave the school, the force added.

The arrested man, in his 30s and from Derby, has been held on suspicion of common assault, coercive and controlling behaviour and false imprisonment, the force said on Wednesday.

He remains in police custody.
