Drivers have been urged to avoid roads in the North York Moors National Park after several vehicles became stuck in snow and ice.

Police said they had received several reports of vehicles stuck in "treacherous" conditions north of Pickering on Friday night.

They asked drivers to avoid Goathland as conditions were extremely difficult and said Wheeldale Road had been closed as it had become impassable.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "The conditions are treacherous, and bear in mind that mobile phone coverage may be poor."

They urged drivers to consider finding alternative routes or postponing their journeys.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place for eastern parts of North Yorkshire until 23:59 GMT on Saturday.
