People crossing the English Channel in small boats are to be taken to a different Kent port for several weeks while repairs take place at the Dover processing centre.

The Home Office said arrivals would be taken to Ramsgate during the closure of Western Jet Foil, meaning Border Force crews could face longer journeys and lifeboats may be called out more frequently.

A spokesperson for the Home Office said the work at Western Jet Foil was "essential maintenance" designed to keep the facility operating efficiently and would "save taxpayer money".

Processing is expected to return to Dover once the repairs are completed.
