Coastguard stood down after extensive searches
ContributedA five-hour search into reports of a person possibly in difficulty in the water has been stood down.
HM Coastguard said following "extensive shoreline and offshore searches" near Towan Beach, Newquay, no-one was found to be in distress.
Search and rescue teams were first informed of the incident at about 17:00 GMT on Monday. Newquay and Padstow RNLI and a coastguard helicopter helped conduct searches of the area.
Searches were called off at about 22:00 GMT, HM Coastguard added.
A spokesperson said: "HM Coastguard responded to reports of a person possibly in difficulty in the water off Towan Beach yesterday.
"Following extensive shoreline and offshore searches, the search was stood down with no-one found to be in distress."
Jill Rylance, from Falmouth Coastguard, said: "Due to the conditions, it is possible someone thought they saw someone in the water, but it could have been something else.
"The conditions were quiet rough and very windy at the time, and that could have potentially thrown up something that somebody thought was a person.
"They did the right thing calling it in if that's what they believe they saw."
She said the Coastguard responded accordingly but "nothing was found".
