Work on the A63 underpass started in 2020

A new underpass on the A63 in Hull city centre has opened to traffic, six years after work began.

Work started in 2020 on the £355m Castle Street project to build a new split-level junction that involved lowering part of the busy road through an underpass.

The project was originally due to be finished by April 2025, but was delayed by a year due to "extremely challenging ground conditions".

A National Highways spokesperson said work was due to be fully completed by the end of March.

Motorists who had faced long delays during the work said they were expected their daily commutes to improve.

A National Highways spokesperson previously described the scheme as "one of the UK's most complex engineering challenges".

They added: "We have engaged with businesses throughout the process and appreciate everyone's patience."
