Former care home to house rough sleepers
PA MediaA former care home in Enderby is to be turned into temporary accommodation for homeless people.
Blaby District Council is to renovate Dallington House, in Leicester Road, Enderby, following the approval of a planning application on Thursday.
The property has 13 self-contained units, each with a small kitchenette, bathroom and communal areas.
Work on the building is to begin before the end of January with the first residents moving in shortly afterwards, the council said.
The units will be used for people on the council's housing register and rough sleepers.
Officials said they would reduce the authority's reliance on putting people in unsuitable bed and breakfast accommodation.
People staying at the facility would have access to workshops to help them manage their own tenancies and reduce the risk of becoming homeless again.
The council said it had seen the number of homeless households it supported rise by 64% over the past five years.
Most are local individuals or families who cannot afford high private rents or to get on the property ladder, the council added.
