Dental students are offering half-price surgery to patients who require complex treatment.

The University of Lancashire dentistry students are offering wisdom tooth extraction or complex tooth or root removal for £35 per tooth.

The students, all qualified dentists, are undertaking postgraduate training to develop their skills and levels of experience.

Professor Kate Taylor, who specialises in oral surgery, said people were "desperate for dental care" and there were more than 4,000 patients in Lancashire who were waiting to be seen.

'Advanced procedures'

"Our community dental clinic, which is led by specialists and consultants, can accept patients who have been referred for specialist treatment and who are experiencing long delays," said Taylor.

"It's a 'win-win' as the patients will receive low-cost treatment for complex oral surgery. In return, qualified dentists will be able to develop their skills and undertake advanced procedures using top-of-the-range facilities."

Surgery will take place, under local anaesthetic, at the university's dental clinic on Preston Campus.

Wisdom tooth surgery, complex, or routine tooth extraction on the NHS in England is priced at £75.30 per course of treatment.
