Highland Council and energy firm SSEN Transmission have signed an agreement about the future of the former Inverness College site.

The power company said it would initially use the area to house workers upgrading electricity transmission lines in the region.

After five years, the site in the city's Longman Industrial Estate would be handed over to Highland Council.

The local authority plans to eventually build a new residential and commercial development to help support local housing needs.

SSEN Transmission has contributed more than £2.7m to enable the purchase and progress the development for long-term community benefit.

The company's Richard Jennings, said "It's important to us as that we leave a lasting legacy from upgrading the grid in the north of Scotland."

Malcolm MacLeod, of Highland Council, said affordable housing was a "core element" of the site's future.
