Man arrested over violent disorder at barracks
BBCA man has been arrested following reports of a small group of people blocking the entrance to a training camp, according to Sussex Police.
Sussex Police responded to the incident at Crowborough Training Camp on Wednesday.
Ch Supt Nick Dias said: "A 44-year-old man from Heathfield was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, and remains in custody at this time.
"Investigations are continuing into several reported assaults and threats of violence during the incident."
Home Office plans to temporarily house 540 male asylum seekers at the military site have sparked local protests in recent weeks and have been at the centre of public and political meetings.
Ch Supt Dias said he knew the proposed use of the training camp had "caused concern within the community".
"We recognise the public's right to peacefully protest and express their views," he added.
"The vast majority of those who have taken part in recent demonstrations have done so lawfully and respectfully.
"However, when the actions of a small minority stray into criminality, we will take appropriate action."
He added investigations were ongoing.
Police issued a dispersal order, which grants officers temporary powers to order people to leave an area, for roads surrounding the barracks.
The order expires at 21:15 GMT on Wednesday.
"We will take robust action against anyone involved in criminality and anti-social behaviour," a police spokesperson said.
