Plans have been submitted to transform a former early 20th Century mill in Long Eaton into new homes.

Developer ALB Group submitted the plans to Erewash Borough Council to revamp Bridge Mills, in Derby Road, into 80 one and two-bedroom apartments.

The three-storey former lace factory building is by the Erewash Canal and features a 110ft (33.5m) high brick chimney.

If plans are approved, ALB anticipates work to begin "immediately" and hopes the first apartments will be ready for occupation within 18 months.

The building, which was built in 1902 by F Perks & Son for Long Eaton Bridge Mills Co. Ltd, is understood to have been the last multi-story tenement factory to be built in England.

Arran Bailey, managing director at ALB said: "Long Eaton has a long lace-making and manufacturing history, and its buildings are a reminder of that proud past.

"To be in a position to preserve the buildings that brought employment to the area and will now bring much needed accommodation to the local community, is a great honour."
