Wealden taxi passengers face 10% fare hike
Getty ImagesWealden taxi passengers are facing a 10% fare hike as diesel prices spike amid the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran.
According to the RAC Foundation its average price in the UK came to 144.5p per litre as of March 4, a council report said.
New prices could come into force from November with Wealden District Council (WDC) set to discuss the matter on Thursday.
A report by the local authority said maximum fares last increased in October 2022, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Since then, WDC said, inflation has seen prices rise about 15%.
But officers said average diesel prices had fallen by about 25% over the same period - dropping from 188p per litre in October 2022 and 141p per litre in February 2026.
As a result they deemed a 10% rise in maximum fares "reasonable".
If it gets committee backing, a public consultation is set to happen this year.
The results could then be discussed by the council in September, when a decision on the proposals would be made.
