A new bridge between Ouseburn and Gateshead has been proposed

A new footbridge could cross the River Tyne as part of proposed regeneration plans.

The bridge would link Newcastle's Ouseburn to Gateshead, according to a document published by the North East MSA which details its 25-year vision for the region.

The report suggested the bridge would "extend the spirit of Ouseburn's heritage-led reinvention" to Gateshead.

The document will be presented to the cabinets of Newcastle and Gateshead councils next week, followed by the North East MSA. The plans will then be subject to a public consultation.

According to the report, the bridge is required because the pedestrian crossings across the Tyne are currently concentrated in the city centre between the Millennium Bridge and the Swing Bridge.

It said the new Ouseburn bridge could create a "distinctive cross-river waterfront quarter", according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The report also reiterated plans to build a new River Tyne bridge as part of Newcastle's Forth Yards regeneration.

The report said this bridge, alongside the Ouseburn bridge, would create "two connected and integrated cross-Tyne urban neighbourhoods".

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said: "This plan is about creating places with even more great jobs, high-quality social housing, bustling high streets and well-connected neighbourhoods."

Newcastle City Council leader Colin Ferguson said he hoped Tyneside could become a "nationally recognised regeneration success story in the decades to come".

Gateshead Council leader Nick Allan said the economic benefits by strengthening the "heart of our region" would be felt beyond the banks of the Tyne.

Other plans detailed in the report include plans for the long-delayed arena in Gateshead, the building of a new station near Gateshead College and the potential to launch river transport schemes.
