The fire service said crews were called to the fire in the early hours of Friday morning

A fire at an old police station is believed to have been started deliberately, and is being treated as "suspicious," the fire service said.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service crews were sent to the derelict police station on Heavitree Road in Exeter, Devon, following reports of smoke in the early hours of Friday morning.

Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were called at 01:45 GMT to the "small fire" and confirmed noone was inside the building at the time.

Police said inquires were ongoing and believed the fire was started deliberately.

Appliances from Danes Castle, Crediton and Middlemoor attended the incident and said the fire was within the property.

"Crews donned breathing apparatus and began searching for any persons inside, as well as fighting the fire," the fire service added.

In November last year, two fires, thought to have been deliberate, were started at the same building within the same week.
