A man has been seriously injured in a crash between an electric off-road motorcycle and a car.

The crash happened just before 17:00 GMT on Split Crow Road, at the junction with Mersey Road, in Gateshead.

Northumbria Police said the motorcyclist, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital for treatment.

The motorcycle was taken away by two unknown people after the crash, the force added, while the driver of the black Vauxhall Corsa remained at the scene.

Police have asked for witnesses or anyone with information about the whereabouts of the bike to get in touch.
