A popular soup fundraising event has raised £22,000 to help fight homelessness in the island.

The 27th Soup Kitchen in St Helier's Royal Square in Jersey took place on Tuesday and saw more than 40 kinds of soups served to the community by restaurants, schools and community groups, with some selling out in the morning.

It was organised by the Shelter Trust, which provides services to homeless people.

After meeting its fundraising target, the charity thanked volunteers and described the event as "a wonderful show of community support".

Shelter Trust chairman Mike Powell said: "For many this is the start of Christmas involving the broadest cross section of our community who come together in recognition that there is always someone less fortunate.

"Grateful thanks to all those who contributed soup and bread and all the other services that are required to make this event such a success.

"That includes, of course, all our volunteers and everyone who chose to have soup with Shelter."
