New 20mph limits to be implemented in more streets

A 20mph speed limit is set to be implemented in a neighbourhood in Leicester alongside traffic-calming measures.

More than a dozen streets in and around Clumber Road in North Evington will have the limit reduced as part of a £45,000 Leicester City Council scheme.

Eight speed humps will also be installed in Clumber Road and Copdale Road.

The changes, which were approved by the council this week, will be "a good fit for the neighbourhood", said mayor Sir Peter Soulsby.

Soulsby added: "We have consulted with residents, businesses and ward councillors.

"Lower traffic speeds greatly reduce the risk and severity of traffic collisions, help reduce noise and anti-social driving, and can encourage people to feel more confident about walking or cycling in their neighbourhoods."

The 20mph limits will come into force in Benson Street, Bolsover Street, Clumber Road, Copdale Road, Crown Hills Avenue, Elizabeth Street, Jellicoe Road, Kitchener Road, Lancaster Street, Nottingham Road, Roseberry Street, Rufford Street, Saville Street, Sherwood Street, Temple Road, The Langhill, The Little Way, The Wayne Way and Thoresby Street.

The changes are part of the council's wider aim to introduce 20mph limits on at least 80% of residential streets in the city.

Soulsby said: "This rolling programme of road-safety measures over the last 14 years has seen improvements made in communities across the city to help make residential streets safer for everyone to use.

"We now have 1,924 streets in Leicester which have a 20mph speed limit, covering more than 417km (259 miles) of highway.

"This latest scheme is another important step towards our goal."
