Plans for a padel court complex at a retail park have been approved for the second time, after developers scaled back the scheme.

Sunderland City Council originally gave permission for the nine-court facility earlier this year at Peel Retail Park in Washington, however, the operator, Soul Padel Ltd had to re-submit the plans due to underground utilities running across the area.

The scheme has been reduced from nine padel courts to seven and will include additional parking, while plans for a clubhouse, toilets, coffee bar and seating area remain unchanged.

The council said the new design was "good quality" and acceptable in size and scale.

Planning documents said Soul Padel was an operator specialising in the development and management of padel courts across the UK.

Council planners who approved the original nine-court scheme agreed the proposals would not have a detrimental impact on the vitality and viability of Washington town centre or Concord district centre.

They also noted that developers had demonstrated there were no suitable alternative sites available within the designated centres.

The council's planning department approved the revised plans on Tuesday.
