Bank move puts more than 160 jobs at risk
GoogleMore than 160 jobs are at risk as a bank looks to relocate the majority of its staff to Glasgow.
Tesco Bank said it was looking to leave its offices at Quorum Business Park, near Newcastle, later this year to "simplify" operations.
The bank, which has about 162 staff at its North Tyneside base, said a consultation was under way and workers would be "strongly supported".
Tesco Insurance and Money Services, which is located at the same building, will not be affected by the proposals.
Tesco Bank was acquired by Barclays in November 2024.
A spokesperson said: "We plan to leave our Newcastle office later in 2026.
"We're now entering a period of collective consultation, and as part of this process we'll be discussing redeployment opportunities with all colleagues, including relocation support."
The majority of roles will move to Scotland.
If proposals to vacate the North Tyneside premises go ahead, staff will be given the option to move to Glasgow or redeploy to existing roles at Barclays' Sunderland campus.
Some would also be offered a temporary home-working arrangement, the spokesperson added.
Daniel Adams, national officer for trade union Usdaw, confirmed consultation talks were ongoing.
"During the process we will interrogate the business case for Barclays' proposals and seek the best deal possible for members," he said.
"In the meantime, we will be seeking the views of members on the proposals and providing them with the support, advice and representation they need."
