Budding young singers have been urged to consider life as a chorister at Bradford Cathedral.

An open event on Saturday 7 March will see children given the chance to meet other choristers, watch them perform and also be invited to sing together in the hope some might decide to apply for a place.

If accepted, choristers aged between seven and 13 years old would receive a free musical education, the chance to sing on TV and radio and to go on trips and tours, a Bradford Cathedral spokesperson said.

Geoffrey Woollatt, Bradford Cathedral's director of music, said: "Being a cathedral chorister is a great opportunity to make new friends, sing and have fun together, and learn more about music."

"I'm very much looking forward to welcoming young singers to Bradford Cathedral to experience a day in the life of a chorister," he added.

The cathedral spokesperson said no experience was necessary to become a member, with the choir rehearsing twice a week and performing every other Sunday - except during the school holidays.

The spokesperson also said all girls and boys could apply "irrespective of family, educational, financial, or religious background".

The open day will take place between 10:00 GMT and 12:30 GMT on Saturday.
