Construction giant Balfour Beatty will appear in court after a worker died following an incident at the Atomic Weapons Establishment's (AWE) Aldermaston site.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) said the 58-year-old man, from east London, died in hospital after he was injured there on 6 July 2023.

The ONR, the country's nuclear regulator, said the incident was a conventional health and safety matter and there was no radiological risk to the public.

Balfour Beatty Group Limited is set to face two health and safety charges at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court on 18 March.

In a statement in October, the company said: "We acknowledge the findings of the [ONR]... and it is with great sadness that we look back on the tragic events of July 2023."

It said its thoughts remained with the man's family, friends and co-workers.

"The health and safety of our workforce will always be our primary concern. As legal proceedings have now commenced, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time," it added.
