Rugby supporters' 'racist abuse' at game investigated

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is investigating after discriminatory language and deeply personal insults were allegedly said at Smiths Rugby, based in Cheltenham during a match on Saturday against Chosen Hill FP RFC.
A Cheltenham club spokesperson said the reported behaviour directed towards their players was "wholly unacceptable and has no place in rugby" as it contradicts the game's core values of teamwork, respect and sportsmanship.
Chosen Hill FP RFC said it is taking the complaint "very seriously", adding that appropriate disciplinary action will follow where warranted.
Smiths Rugby committee said it was standing "firmly" alongside its players, and has reported the incident to governing bodies.
"Nobody should have to face discrimination, intimidation or personal abuse simply for playing or supporting the game they love," a club spokesperson said.
"The strength of our club lies not only in what we achieve on the pitch, but in how we treat and stand by one another off it. Racism, discrimination and personal abuse have no place in our club or in our game."
Smiths Rugby committee said it will "continue to engage with and support the appropriate processes as they progress" and encouraged players or members needing support to contact the club committee.
'Extremely disappointed'
Chosen Hill FP RFC said it was "extremely disappointed that this matter has arisen", adding it does not condone racism, discrimination or abusive behaviour.
"While we are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our members and supporters, this must always be demonstrated in a respectful manner towards opposition players, officials, supporters and everyone involved in the game," the club said.
"Such behaviour is entirely contrary to the standards, values, and principles that our club strives to uphold."
Chosen Hill FP RFC that added discussions have been held with members.
The RFU said it would be working with Gloucestershire RFU to investigate the incident.
"All reports of racism are taken extremely seriously, as it has no place in rugby or wider society," it said.
