Police dogs Bryn and Ebby to bow wow out

Two long-serving police dogs have been praised for their dedication as they prepare to retire within days of each other.

Northamptonshire's PD Bryn and PD Ebby both began their careers in early 2020, and have spent nearly seven years working for the force by locating missing people, tracking suspects and searching for evidence.

PD Bryn was named in honour of a police dog shot and killed during an incident in 1998.

Supt Kelly Glister, of the force's operations department, said: "Bryn and Ebby have both been outstanding ambassadors for our Dog Section throughout their careers."

To mark their retirement, a ceremony was held at the force's headquarters, which was attended by representatives from the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals, as well as colleagues, handlers and supporters.

Supt Glister added: "Bryn carries a particularly special significance for Northamptonshire Police through his name and connection to the original PD Bryn.

"We are immensely proud of everything he has achieved, alongside Ebby, during their time with us.

Police dog handler PC Lucy Sculthorpe, who has worked with PD Bryn, said the animal had "gone on to create his own legacy through his dedication and character".

"It has been a privilege to work alongside him and, while he will be missed, he deserves a long and happy retirement," she said.

Both dogs will now spend time relaxing with their families after years of serving their community, with Bryn retiring on Wednesday and Ebby on Friday.

The force is already looking forward to the arrival of two young police dogs, PD Blaize and PD Theo, who are currently being assessed before starting their formal training next month.
