Supplies were cut off as a result of a burst water main, United Utilities said

Two thousand homes in Burnley were left without a running water supply overnight after a burst main caused flooding, the town's MP has said.

Oliver Ryan said residents in Gannow, Ightenhill, Whittlefield and some of lower Padiham contacted him late on Thursday to say their supply was either off or operating at low pressure.

United Utilities (UU) said the incident had been reported after 18:00 GMT and confirmed supplies had been restored by about 04:30 on Friday.

The provider said the outage had been caused by a burst water main on Sycamore Avenue.

A UU spokesperson said that while customers' taps should now be flowing, its teams would remain in the area over the next few days to complete repair works.

"Our teams have worked really hard to get supply restored to all the properties last night," the spokesperson added.

"We want to apologise to customers impacted by the loss of water, and we thank them for their patience."
