Part of A30 closed due to vehicle fire smoke
Press AssociationPart of a main road has been closed due to "large amounts of smoke" from a vehicle fire, a council has said.
Cornwall Council confirmed both carriageways of the A30 had been closed near Pennygillam, Launceston. The eastbound carriageway has since reopened, police said.
Students have been sent home from Launceston College, and staff said the smoke travelled to "approximately two thirds of the school site".
The council urged people nearby to keep windows and doors closed.
In a post on Facebook from Launceston College, it said: "We would like to reassure everyone that all students and staff are safe and secure.
"We are working closely with the fire service and have moved our school community inside to buildings furthest away from the road.
"As the smoke has spread, we now need to avoid, where possible, approximately two thirds of the school site.
"We are therefore asking parents and carers to collect their child or children as soon as they are able to."
The police and fire service remain at the scene, with drivers asked to avoid the area and follow emergency services' advice.
Speaking on BBC Radio Cornwall, Shaun Dyer said: "They've stopped all the traffic while they are trying to put the fire out.
"I could see the truck and it was well ablaze... as I went over the A30 there was no traffic moving in either direction."
