A council said the vandalism of a war memorial bench has caused "concern among residents".

Hampton Parish Council posted on social media on Sunday that the bench, located in Hampton, Peterborough, had been spray painted along with a nearby tree.

"The damage was discovered recently and has since caused understandable concern among residents, visitors and those who use the memorial as a place to honour the sacrifices of service personnel," a council spokesperson said.

Cambridgeshire Police said the incident was reported to them on Monday and that there were no lines of inquiry.

"Incidents like this not only cause physical damage but also emotional distress for those who value and care for the site," the council spokesperson added.

They said the council would continue to monitor the situation and work with local authorities.

Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to get in contact.
