100-year-old fire station put up for sale

A former fire station in north Liverpool has gone on the market after its owner said redevelopment plans had become unaffordable.

Best Care Liverpool, which bought the 100-year-old Aintree Fire Station on Longmoor Lane in Fazakerley, unveiled plans in January 2025 for four flats and offices.

However, planning permission for the housing scheme was refused.

Revised plans for offices were later approved by Liverpool City Council.

The station, which was built in 1926, closed in May 2024 when Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service moved to a new £40m site on Long Lane.

Jason Foley-Doherty, strategic partnership director at Rutter Green, which is overseeing the sale, said: "The former Aintree Fire Station is one of the most distinctive and unique commercial properties to come to market in the Liverpool area in recent years.

"Buildings with this level of heritage, visibility and character are exceptionally rare, particularly when they are offered with vacant possession and planning permission already in place for a commercial conversion.

"We expect significant interest from a range of buyers, including owner-occupiers, investors and developers looking to secure a truly unique asset."

The site has been listed for sale at £750,000.
