An emergency service response was needed to rescue a walker who became stranded in an area previously hit by a landslip.

Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team said it helped one person stuck on the cliffs at Dunnose, Isle of Wight, after the alarm was raised at 15:44 GMT on Thursday.

Coastguard rescue teams from Ventnor and Bembridge were sent, along with an search and rescue helicopter, as well as police and fire service personnel.

The person was winched to safety by helicopter and did not require any medical treatment.

Ventnor coastguard said the walker was on the beach between Bonchurch and Luccombe, but feared they would be cut off and ended up venturing towards an unstable area.

"We understand mistakes happen but this area remains unstable with the Isle of Wight Council working to ensure the area remains closed for safety reasons," a statement said.

"Please ensure you respect these footpath closures in place for your own safety."

Isle of Wight Council said the site had been known to islanders as "the Landslip" since at least the early 1800s because of historical ground movements in the past.

Dunnose Point lies to the east of Ventnor, and was the site of a large landslip in December 2023.
