Queen of the South chairman Billy Hewitson said the search for new directors remained an "ongoing process"

The chairman of Scottish League 1 side Queen of the South has said the search for new directors is continuing more than 18 months after the board announced its intention to step down.

Billy Hewitson said that adding new board members at the Dumfries club was not something that could be "done suddenly or without careful consideration".

He said the arrival - and subsequent departure - of one new director had not hindered the club's progress.

He added that there was "no uncertainty" within the club as a result of the search for new directors and the situation had "no impact" on performances on the pitch.

The directors announced their intention to stand down in February last year, saying they "needed a succession plan and we're just pushing it forward."

But so far only one director - Mark Blount - has departed. One new director, Jim McLinden, did come on board but subsequently left.

Mr Hewitson said the board still wanted to introduce younger members but in a way that would maintain "long-term stability".

He said creating the role of chief executive had been part of that process of transition.

"Adding new board members is an ongoing process, but it's not something that can be done suddenly or without careful consideration - finding the right people takes time," he said.

"We remain fully committed to this gradual, planned approach to ensure the club stays strong and stable."

He said the arrival and then departure of a board member did not mean the club was "stuck" with any ideas he had tried to implement.

He said the current leadership team had a "clear and proactive plan" which had already delivered new indoor pitches with plans for upgraded changing rooms and an enhanced hospitality area.

"We remain firmly on course and continue to progress in line with our long-term vision for the club," he added.

Mr Hewitson said it was still his intention that any new board should be from the area.

"We believe it is essential to have individuals who genuinely care about the club, the town, and the wider region," he said.

"This club represents far more than simply a team on the pitch. It is a community institution, built on local identity and local support.

"Our intention is for the club to continue being led by people from the area, for the people of the area."

He said the ongoing search for a new board had no effect on performances with Queen of the South currently sitting in a midtable position.

"There is no uncertainty within the football club and it will continue as always," he said.

"The players are under professional contracts, some for two years, which reflects their commitment to the club and their focus on delivering results on the pitch.

"Therefore, this has no impact on the on-field success."

However, he said he hoped the club could continue to move up the Scottish football ladder.

'Challenging financial climate'

"Like many organisations, Queen of the South is navigating a very challenging financial climate within Scottish football and the country generally," he said.

"On the pitch, our immediate focus is to improve performance and consistently compete at the top end of the table.

"Looking further ahead, our ambition is to establish the club in the highest possible level.

"We are committed to delivering both sporting success and sustainable growth, ensuring the club thrives for our supporters and the wider community."
