Councillor Chris Burden urged businesses to apply for the funding as soon as possible

A new £400,000 grant scheme is being launched to support Wolverhampton high street businesses with improvements.

The Vibrant High Streets grants programme is aimed at supporting small and independent retailers and businesses in the city centre, Bilston, Wednesfield and other high streets.

Businesses would be able to apply for up to £5,000 towards frontage improvements, interior and external refurbishments and digital, marketing and security, City of Wolverhampton Council said.

Applications for the grant scheme will open on the authority's website from 6 March.

The council said the money could be used to help improve visual appearance, safety and customer service experience to boost local spend.

The grants were subject to availability of funds and distributed at the discretion of the council, a spokesperson added.

Councillor Chris Burden, cabinet member for city development, jobs and skills, said demand would be high and urged eligible businesses to apply as soon as possible.

"The aim of this grant scheme is to build on the major investment currently being delivered across our urban centres," Burden explained.

"This further support for our high street retailers and businesses gives them the opportunity to secure funding that will enable them to thrive and boost the local economy."

Applications will be considered as they are received, with the scheme set to close once all the funding is allocated.
