Four people have been taken to hospital after being rescued by firefighters from a four-storey sheltered accommodation block in west London.

Ten fire engines and around 70 crew from London Fire Brigade were called to a blaze on Brooks Road, Chiswick at about 16:30 GMT on 9 January.

The fire affected a flat and a corridor on the first floor. Crews carried out multiple rescues from inside the building, with some residents wearing fire escape hoods.

Four patients were taken to hospital by paramedics, and fire crews are expected to remain at the scene this evening.

A rest centre has been set up locally for around 30 residents affected by the fire.

The brigade said crews from Chiswick, Acton, Mitcham and surrounding stations brought the fire under control by 18:05 GMT.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
