A man has denied the murder of a "loving, caring" 24-year-old who was shot in Nottingham.

Nottinghamshire Police said emergency services were called to a property in Ryeland Gardens, in The Meadows, shortly after 05:30 GMT on 28 February.

Coel Tainton, 24, sustained a gunshot wound and died a short time later despite treatment from paramedics, the force added.

Jack Preston, 34, of Ryeland Gardens, pleaded not guilty to murder during a hearing at Nottingham Crown Court via video-link from HMP Peterborough on Wednesday.

Preston, who wore a white T-shirt and a green jacket for the hearing, was told he would face a three-week trial on 24 August.

Preston spoke only to confirm his name, that he could hear the court, and to enter his plea.

Judge Nirmal Shant KC said he must next appear in court for a pre-trial review on 10 July.

In a statement released through police after his death, Tainton's family paid tribute to their "beloved son, brother, nephew, cousin, grandson, and friend to so many".
