Birling Gap steps to reopen sooner than expected
Eddie MitchellThe only set of steps for accessing the beach at Birling Gap, which were closed in January after the surrounding cliffs collapsed, will reopen in time for the early May bank holiday.
It was previously reported that repairs would not be completed until summer but Wealden District Council has said the steps will reopen by 2 May.
A contractor has been appointed and work will begin in mid-April, the council confirmed.
Councillor Kelvin Williams said it had taken "months" to assess the structure of the steps and their condition, and thanked residents for their patience.
