Cambridgeshire Police said it was called to the Priory Golf Centre in Wimblington on Monday

A golf centre has described the death of a seven-year-old boy found in a pond at the site as a "heartbreaking loss".

Emergency services were called to the Priory Golf and Activity Centre in Wimblington, near March, Cambridgeshire at about 14:00 BST on Monday after reports of a child in water.

The golf centre said in a statement on social media the boy had been reported missing and was found on its premises, where staff administered CPR until emergency services arrived.

"Our deepest condolences and thoughts are with the child's family and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss," it said.

Cambridgeshire Police confirmed the incident happened in a small pond at the activity centre and the death was not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance NHS Trust said the child was taken to Peterborough City Hospital, where he died.

Police added no arrests had been made and a file had been passed to the coroner.

The centre said it closed the site following the incident on Monday and reopened the next day.

It added: "We would like to reassure our customers that this tragic incident was unrelated to our operations or activities."
