Gardeners invited to sign up for waste collection

A council has reopened its subscription service for garden waste collection.

South Hams District Council said households could secure an "early bird" fee of £70 for a year-long subscription if they signed up before 31 March, with prices rising to £73 afterwards.

It said the subscription covered collections for one brown wheelie bin, with a maximum of two subscriptions permitted per household, adding the subscription would run from 1 April.

Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, executive member for waste, said: "Compared to what private companies charge for collections, the annual fee represents very good value for money."

Hodgson added: "The paid garden waste collection service has been running in the South Hams for three years now, and the quality of service for residents has been consistently high, with reliable collections and real convenience for those who sign up.

Subscribers are able to use the brown bins for grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, cut flowers and plants, small branches, weeds, leaves, twigs, windfall fruit and vase flowers.

Existing subscribers are being advised there will be no changes to the service if they renewed by 1 April, allowing them to continue using their brown bins.
