Since July adult websites accessed in the UK have required age verification

Guernsey's Home Affairs Committee is reviewing whether age verification checks can be introduced to adult websites, accessed locally.

Earlier this year the UK government's online safety act forced sites with adult content to introduce "robust" age-checking techniques such as demanding photo ID or running credit card checks.

Concerns were raised by politicians in Jersey last month about the lack of age verification on these sites their.

A spokesman for Guernsey's Home Affairs Committee said it was "reviewing the online safety bill and will be considering what elements might be appropriate to extend to Guernsey."

The UK's online safety act also includes "permissive extent clauses" according to Home Affairs, which means parts of the act can be extended to the Crown Dependencies.

In the UK websites which ignore the new laws can be fined up to £18m, or 10% of worldwide revenue.

Pornhub said the number of UK visitors to its website was down 77% compared with July, when more rigorous age checks were introduced under the Online Safety Act.

Companies have already been fined for not having good enough age verification methods.

AVS Group Ltd which runs a number of pornographic websites was fined £1m on 4 December for not following the law.
