Man charged with attempted rape of woman in park

A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted rape of a woman in her 70s in a park.

The alleged incident took place in Concord Park, in the Shiregreen area of Sheffield, at about 07:30 GMT on Wednesday, South Yorkshire Police said.

Ali Askre, 25, of no fixed abode, is charged with attempted rape and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He appeared before Sheffield Magistrates' Court earlier and was remanded to appear at the city's crown court on 24 April.

The woman remains in hospital with serious injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening, police said.
