Man held on suspicion of murder after A1 crash
GoogleA man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was hit by a car on the A1 in Lincolnshire.
Police believe the 52-year-old woman was in a car with a man and a large dog when it broke down on Saturday evening. It is thought they left the car in a layby on the southbound lane, near the Fox Inn, at South Witham.
As she walked across the carriageway to the northbound lane, she was hit by at least one vehicle, including a grey Seat Leon, police said.
Emergency services arrived at the scene but the woman, and the dog, died at the scene. A 58-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and a 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.
A spokesperson said: "We understand the woman, a man and their dog had left their Vauxhall Corsa parked in a layby north of the Fox Inn on the southbound lane of the A1 and had walked over to the northbound lane.
"It is part of our investigation to determine when or for how long they had been on the northbound side."
Witness appeal
The force said they had received several calls from the public after the crash, which happened north of the junction for South Witham and Castle Bytham.
Police said there are several businesses nearby, including Trophy's Cars, an OK Diner and a Travelodge.
There is also a truck stop in the southbound lane near The Fox Inn.
Police asked anyone who saw anything suspicious between 15:40 and 21:35 BST to contact them.
In addition, anyone who saw a black Corsa in a layby or travelled on the A1 between those times is asked to check any dashcam footage.
