Project to modernise key commuter route completed
North Northamptonshire CouncilA programme of pedestrian and traffic safety improvements have been completed to "modernise" a key road in a county.
North Northamptonshire Council said it had worked with Kier to improve the junction on the A6 in Burton Latimer with support from the government's Safer Roads Fund.
The work has involved the introduction of "controlled pedestrian facilities", including accessible dropped kerbs, pedestrian guard rails and tactile paving.
Councillor Chris McGiffen, from the Reform UK-controlled local authority, said the project was evidence of its "commitment to improving road safety, infrastructure, and the overall driving experience across the region".
Other improvements to the road include:
- Resurfaced footways and carriageway to improve ride quality and long-term durability
- A dedicated maintenance bay enabling service vehicles to operate without disrupting traffic
- Improved drainage systems to reduce the risk of surface water and flooding
- Enhanced street lighting to improve visibility and safety during night-time conditions
- And the introduction of a 50mph (80km/h) speed limit to calm traffic and promote safer driving
Allan Rigby, from Kier, said: "The improvements have modernised this section of the A6, addressing long-standing safety concerns while minimising disruption to road users during construction.
"It's rewarding to see the positive impact these changes will have for the local community."
