Police Scotland has warned that sounds similar to gun shots are likely to be heard during a firearms exercise at Edinburgh's Murrayfield stadium on Tuesday.

Armed police and military helicopters will also take part in the planned training.

Blank ammunition is to be used between 13:30 and 14:30.

Police said there would be no public access to Murrayfield during this time and there would be nothing to see once personnel were inside the stadium.

Police Scotland said the training was part of Exercise Kukri Dawn which was previously held at RAF Odiham in Hampshire in England.

A spokesperson said: "Exercises are a crucial way for different organisations to learn, share knowledge and work well together.

"It's important for exercises to be as realistic as possible to fully test a multi-agency response.

"In real life, this could save lives and prevent further injuries."

Police Scotland said stadium staff had notified residents in the surrounding area of the training.
