Island primary school mistakenly listed for disposal by council
GoogleAn island primary school was mistakenly listed among assets for possible council disposal, the local authority has confirmed.
Luing Primary, off the west coast near Oban, has been mothballed by Argyll and Bute Council since 2020 due to a lack of pupils.
It was among two dozen sites owned by the council which were named this week as being earmarked for disposal between 2026 and 2028.
However, the council's executive director Douglas Hendry has now admitted that was done in error and the school remains mothballed.
He told Argyll and Bute Council's policy and resources committee: "I can confirm that the inclusion in that list was an error. There was a proposal considered by the community services committee to close Luing Primary, but that was not accepted.
"That freezes the position for a period of five years, so there are no proposals at this stage to look at disposal of Luing Primary.
"Hopefully that reassurance is helpful and we will seek to make that position clear."
The council's community services committee voted against a proposal to end education provision at Luing Primary in March 2024.
Mothballing was then continued for a further year in March 2025.
The sites confirmed as still being earmarked for disposal include the former annexe site at Hermitage Primary School in Helensburgh.
The former Rothesay Academy and the old Ardchonnel, Minard and Kilchrenan primary schools also remain on the list.
An asset disposal usually lets the council sell or manage each asset as they see fit.
