Mayo: Teens hurt as train hits car at level crossing

Two brothers have been injured after a train struck the car they were travelling in.

The incident happened at an unattended level crossing at about 15:15 local time in Garryredmond, a townland outside Claremorris, in County Mayo.

RTÉ reports the pair, who are aged 16 and 20, are from Clifden in County Galway.

The Dublin to Westport train had 190 passengers on board. None of them were injured.

The brothers were airlifted to Galway University Hospital, gardaí (Irish police) said.

Their condition has been described as stable and their family has been notified.

The incident was attended by emergency personnel from the police, fire and ambulance services, supported by the Irish Coast Guard.

An Irish Air Corp helicopter also attended.

Gardaí and Irish Rail are working to facilitate passengers continuing their journey.
