More than 1,200 attend city's liver check-ups

More than 1,200 liver scans have been completed as part of a pop-up health clinic scheme aiming to make the checks more accessible.

The tests have taken place in community centres, businesses and faith settings - including gurdwaras, mosques, Hindu mandirs and a Buddhist centre - in Wolverhampton.

Those behind the project said it had broken down barriers, helping people better understand their liver health and access treatment if necessary.

The initiative, launched last year, has led to nearly 200 referrals to The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.

This in turn has meant timely support for those at risk of alcohol-related liver disease, according to health bosses.

They said the scans were painless and were similar to an ultrasound. They check for scarring and fat build-up in the liver.

The results - which are provided instantly - can be used as early indicators of conditions such as fatty liver, fibrosis, or cirrhosis.

At the pop-up clinics, healthcare professionals then offer attendees advice and explain the findings.

Working with partners had shown "the value of culturally sensitive, accessible, and health-focused interventions in breaking down stigma and helping residents to take proactive steps towards better liver health", said Obaida Ahmed, council cabinet member for health and wellbeing.

"Early liver damage often presents no symptoms," she added.

"The Fibro-scan is quick, non-invasive and pain-free, and provides instant results on liver condition – including identifying any issues which need addressing."
