Road closures as safety measures added near schools
GoogleRoad closures and traffic restrictions will be put in place on a busy route in Leicester as work takes place on a £180,000 road safety scheme.
Leicester City Council said traffic calming measures will be installed in Gleneagles Avenue, near Herrick Primary School and English Martyrs' Catholic School, from 17 October.
It said work will include raising two pedestrian crossings to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for pedestrians and schoolchildren.
Road resurfacing and maintenance works will also be carried out during the scheme, which is due to be completed by 2 November.
The works will be carried out in two phases during the school half-term break.
In the first phase, the section of Gleneagles Avenue between Lockerbie Avenue and Dunblane Avenue will be closed for up to eight days.
From 25 October, work will move closer to the junction with Peebles Way, with temporary traffic lights in operation.
A stretch of Gleneagles Avenue between Lockerbie Walk and Peebles Way will then close to traffic for two days from 31 October.
Diversions will be in place throughout the works and access to homes and businesses will be maintained.
Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said improvements were needed on the "busy route".
"The work will get under way during the school half-term break when traffic is considerably reduced, and we will do all we can to ensure that the scheme is completed as quickly as possible so that the road fully reopens in good time," he added.
The project forms part of a package of road safety improvements funded by the government.
The wider scheme also includes extending a nearby 20mph zone to cover 27 additional roads in the residential area around Herrick Primary School and part of Gleneagles Avenue.
