Online shoppers warned to look out for fake goods
Cornwall CouncilShoppers are being warned of fake goods following a rise in local listings advertising counterfeit products.
Cornwall Council's Trading Standards team said it had noticed an increase in local sellers advertising counterfeit items including football shirts, designer handbags, branded clothing and footwear, using online platforms.
They are usually made from poor quality materials, can pose safety risks and undermine legitimate businesses, the council said.
Gary Webster, trading standards group leader at Cornwall Council, said: "Anyone caught selling fake products could face prosecution, hefty fines, and even imprisonment."
Counterfeit goods are often described online as replicas and are usually cheaper than the genuine item would be.
Selling fake goods is illegal and bank accounts linked to illegal sales may be suspended or permanently closed.
Mr Webster said: "Counterfeit goods harm our local economy. These illegal sellers undermine local retailers and damage the reputation of trusted brands.
"We encourage people to buy from reputable sources and report any suspected counterfeit activity to trading standards."
The council urged people to report suspected counterfeit goods via Citizens Advice Consumer Service.
