A recycling centre will be closed for six weeks for extensive works, a council has said.

The household waste recycling centre in Totnes, Devon, will be closed from 31 January until 15 March for resurfacing and drainage works.

Devon County Council said the work would be carried out outside of the busy summer period to "try to minimise disruption to the public".

Jacqui Hodgson, council cabinet member for climate change and biodiversity, said due to the scale of the work there was "no way we can safely carry out the works while the site remains open".

Residents have been advised to use alternative recycling centres such as Newton Abbot, Kingsbridge or Ivybridge.

Hodgson added: "The site is the smallest in Devon, and it is heavily used by the public.

"In addition, the site waste compaction machinery and the lorries servicing the site and removing the waste and recycling take a toll over the years.

"It's that constant use every day that has resulted in significant wear and tear."
