A man has been charged with murder and attempted murder following a stabbing near a school.

Officers were called to Bridge Road in Alum Rock, Birmingham, shortly after midday on Tuesday.

Mahmood Ibrahim, 32, of no fixed address, was arrested and has since been charged with murder and attempted murder, police said.

He has been remanded in custody and is due before Birmingham Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Ali Alshmari, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene, officers said, while a woman in her 50s suffered injuries to her hand and has since been discharged from hospital.

"We know this happened close to a school, and we have met with members of the local community to discuss their concerns and offer them reassurance," West Midlands Police said.

Det Insp Michelle Cordell added that the investigation into what happened was ongoing.

"Our thoughts remain with Mr Alshmari's family as we carry out our inquiries.

"We are grateful to the public for their response following this incident, and we understand the concern it has caused.

"Footage shared with us has been helpful to the investigation, and we are urging anyone who has not yet been in touch to please do so."

Extra officers remained in the area, she said, and anyone anyone with information was urged to contact the force.
