More snow has fallen across north-east England with some on the way for Cumbria as a spell of cold weather continues into the new week.

The Met Office has issued a snow and ice warning lasting until 11:00 GMT on Tuesday, with scattered wintry showers forecast to move inland from the North Sea.

It comes after a weekend of freezing temperatures, which saw snow blanketing parts of Northumberland, Newcastle, Sunderland, Redcar and Hartlepool.

Some schools have been closed and the Met Office warned travel is likely to be disrupted, with icy patches forming on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

"Snow showers should become more isolated through Monday evening, but a risk of ice will persist through Monday night into Tuesday morning as temperatures fall below freezing," it said.

In Northumberland, Seahouses Primary School and Ellingham C of E Primary School have closed due to unsafe road conditions preventing staff and pupils getting to school.

Embleton Vincent St Edwards C of E Primary School is also closed due a boiler leak and no heating.

In Billingham, St John the Evangelist RC Primary School will be closed on Tuesday due to an issue with the heating system.

Sunderland City Council said its gritting teams were "working hard" to keep the city moving.

"Winter maintenance teams remain on standby 24/7, monitoring weather and road conditions to decide treatments as needed," the local authority added.

Temperatures are expected to gradually lift later in the week

Durham County Council said it would be on standby to grit priority routes from 04:00 GMT after salting them on Sunday.

It follows a weekend when snow and freezing temperatures brought disruption in some places.

Durham Constabulary said Fillpoke Lane between High Hesleden and the A1086 Coast Road at Crimdon had to be closed on Saturday due to the road being "treacherous with ice".

Kilton Lane in East Cleveland was impassable on Sunday due to snow between Lingdale and Kilton Thorpe Lane.

A charity walk in North Yorkshire for Durham mental health hub Checkmate also had to be postponed.

Organisers of the walk, from Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby and back, described conditions the previous day as "terrible" following the snow and wind, and called it off for safety reasons. A new date will be announced.

However, others remained undeterred and still took a dip in the North Sea.

When will the cold snap end?

Temperatures are expected to slowly lift through the rest of this week, although an amber cold health alert from the UK Health Security Agency remains in place across all of the region until 10:00 GMT on Friday.

According to the Met Office, Tuesday is set to bring a mixture of rain and snow.

Sunny spells will develop on Wednesday, but further sleet and snow will arrive overnight, before clearing early on Thursday.
