Thames Valley Police said the child, whose age has not been released, was found seriously injured in Slough and later died in hospital.
A 27-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman from the town were arrested on suspicion of murder and grievous bodily harm on Thursday.
They have since been released on conditional police bail pending further inquiries.
Det Insp Nick Hind, of the force's major crime unit, said: "This is an exceptionally tragic incident, in which a child has sustained serious injuries and, very sadly, has subsequently tragically passed away in hospital."
He said the investigation was at an early stage.
"I appreciate that an incident of this nature will cause significant concern within the community," he said.
"However, based on the information we have at this time, we do not believe there is any broader threat to the public."
